Next Competition
The 8th Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) will be held June 20-22, 2013 (with Sunday, June 23, as a weather backup day).
Update 4/23/13:
Due to the high demand for the (single) ESRA 20-foot launch rail, we will be adapting the 12-foot rails to 12/18-foot rails. These rails have "1010" (1") and "1515" (1.5") aluminum extrusions as guiderails. The 1" guiderails will stay 12 feet long. The 1.5" guiderails will be changed to 18 feet long. These rails also have azimuth pivoting capability (the 20-foot rail does not, except by turning the whole rail base).
Since the magetometer-based apogee sensors are no longer readily available (and we haven't been able to find any other low-cost, simple attitude-based sensors), we are removing the requirement for an attitude-based sensor as the primary recovery initiation device.
Many teams haven't submitted their April updates (see below), including BYU-Idaho, CSULA, ERAU Daytona (Pathfinder V), ERAU Prescott (Eagle Aerospace), ETS Montreal, RPI, Ryerson, UCLA, Univ of Michigan, Univ of Missouri-Columbia, and Univ of Waterloo. Kudos to Univ of Washington, the only team that has sent in every requested update! We have used the information from these updates to estimate launch rail needs and to submit information to the FAA for an airspace waiver.
ESRA is finishing the new launch control system. It will be capable of launching 8 rockets with two separate signals each. If your rocket needs more than 2 signals, that can be accommodated as well.
Application/Update Form:
Teams should submit an application by October 15, 2012 with updates (same form) by Dec 15, Feb 15, April 15, and June 15 to experimentalsoundingrocket@gmail.com
Note: we ask for applications and updates for planning purposes. We don't want to encourage late applications, but we will accept them. If your team can have a rocket ready to launch at the IREC that passes the safety checks (see the rules), then we will let you fly (registration required, of course).
